From 1933 to 1935 Blunck was president of the newlyformed Reichsschrifttumskammer; relations between him and Joseph Goebbels became strained, and Hanns Johst replaced him. A ten-volume edition of his writings appeared in 1938: he received the Goethe medal in the same year. Blunck’s poetry (Balladen und Gedichte (1937) and Die Sage vom Reich (1941–2)) is generally undistinguished and extols Teutonic greatness and North-German peasant life. Blunck was pronounced a Nazi sympathizer and collaborator by the Denazification Tribunal in 1949: he insisted that the verdict was unjust.

Bobrowski, Johannes (1917–65) Bobrowski was born in Tilsit and grew up in Memel, and all his poetry and much of his prose result from the effort to reconstruct through memory the landscape and childhood experiences of this frontier area, in which Poles, Lithuanians, Russians and Jews had lived in close proximity for generations. The war took him further east into the Soviet Union, where he remained a POW until 1949, when he settled in East Berlin and became a publisher’s reader. Bobrowski was both conservative in his debt to poets such as Klopstock mainly ignored in the twentieth century and, in the context of GDR writing, in his Christian commitment, and modernist in his development of free verse and of a fragmentary prose form which allows several voices and perspectives to emerge.

The West German version has, like Bieler’s first novel, picaresque features, but gains by having as its narrator the central character Maria, a sympathetic East Berlin barmaid whose conflicting loyalties to brother and lover motivate her story. The title-story of the collection Der junge Roth (1968)—of the eleven stories five had already appeared in the GDR as märchen und zeitungen (1966)—can be related to the central section of Bieler’s next novel Der Passagier (1971); both deal with crimes committed by seamen.
